Muscular soreness may occur shortly after activity and pass quickly, or it
may not appear until up to 48 hours after exercise and persist for several
days. Stiffness, a sign of declining physical fitness, may be confused with
minor strain as both stiffness and strain produce pain. Muscular Strain is
the same as a "pulled muscle", a partial tear across the width of the muscle
fibers. The damaged muscle, like a similarly torn rubber band or rope, still
works, but with less strength. Beneath the body's surface swelling and lots
of pain. At this point, massage is not recommended until inflammation
subsides. Only rest and ice should be the course taken for a few days, along
with gentle range-of-motion stretching.
Ligamentous Strain or
damage to the ligaments is more often than not a result of overstretching
when a joint is twisted or pulled beyond its normal range of motion. Whether
mild or severe, "sprain" is the catch-all name for over stretched ligaments
that aren't torn. Sprains are most common at the knees, ankles, wrists or
spine. The symptoms are pain at the joint followed by swelling and
discoloration.
